As babies move into Toddlers, seating arrangement need to be made in order to coordinate with their development. Bouncers and swings are not as likely to keep them interested and comfortable due their growing bodies. Although they may probably be able to climb onto the couch or chair, they still do prefer having a spot that is intended just for them. Having a spot intended just for them gives them a safe place to sit as well as will provide some personal space to them.
The Spinmaster Elmo Says Spin Chair has a height of approximately 18 inches at the top of the back of the chair. This is the chair’s highest peak. The bottom of the chair has a rounded bottom and is approximately 16 inches across. The bottom of the chair does have a slight rounded bottom to allow for the chair to spin. The seating area is approximately 6 inches from the bottom. The seating area is also in a circular shape and there is a 10 inch diameter space available. On the back of the chair, a three dimensional image of Elmo appears. His bright wide open eyes are on the top of the chair and the black of his eyes are made with a shiny material. His nose is made a bright orange material that protrudes from the back as well. The mouth area is a flat piece of black material that has been sewn into the back and is in the shape of a smile. The nose and eyes are set high enough on the chair that they are able to act as a head rest. Elmo’s arms reach out to the side of the chair and make of the armrests. The ends of the arms have been given fingers as well. The right thumb of Elmo has a button inside it that activates the sound feature of the chair.
With the exception of the face and bottom, the entire chair has been covered with a furry red material that mimics the texture of Elmo’s hair. The chair has been filled with a foam material making it soft and inviting. Although the chair is made up of different textures, it is all made of a 100% polyester blend. The bottom of the chair is made of a hard plastic material. The battery compartment for the chair is located on the bottom of chair and can be access by unzipping the felt material that is covering it. The zipper runs along the base of the chair. In addition, an off switch can be located on the button if a break from the sounds is needed.
When the Spinmaster Elmo Says Spin Chair has had it’s thumb pressed and the sound feature had been activated, the chair responds with “(giggle) Let’s play Elmo says, Elmo says spin Around.” After a few seconds regardless if the chair is spun around or not, the chair will say “Whee, (giggle) that was fun!” It is assumed that during the brief period during Elmo’s statements, that the toddler will push the chair around. A toddler can easily accomplish this by pushing the chair around with their feet as they are in a sitting position. If a child is standing next to the chair, they are able to spin their chair with their hand as well. As the chair does have a rounded bottom, it will allow for the chair to be pushed back slightly but it would take a significant effort for it to be pushed back far enough that it would turn over.
The Spinmaster Elmo Says Spin Chair is very soft and provides a comfortable sitting area for a toddler. This chair is recommended for children 18 months or older. I would anticipate a child would be interested in this age up through 3-4 years of age depending on their height. A taller child may find it uncomfortable to get up and down from the chair. In order to activate the sound feature, the chair requires 3 AA batteries which are included at the initial purchase. The longevity of the batteries appears to be quite long although it would depend on the amount of use from the toddler. We have not had to change the batteries in 6 months. The chair is surface washable only.
I highly recommend the Spinmaster Elmo Says Spin Chair as it gives a toddler their own personal space and provides a comfortable location for them. It has a cute Elmo design and provides sound features that are interesting for them. The one suggestion I would have for the chair is that they would have provided more variety in the comments made by the chair as it can become tedious after a short while. As the bottom is rounded, if the chair is pushed any direction, it will move slightly in that direction however the edges are flat making it extremely difficult for it to be tipped over. The chair only weighs a few pounds and an adult will not have any difficulty moving it to another location. This chair is good for relaxing with toys but not a ideal for napping.
